2016 Songbirds in Snow Forever Stamp
Regular price $32.99 Save $-32.99One of the best methods scientists use to learn about songbirds is bird banding. After going through special training, researchers capture wild birds and place a small aluminum band on their legs. Each band is inscribed with a different number unique to that bird. If another person later captures the same bird, they simply record the band number along with the bird’s other data. The researcher then sends the information to the North American Bird Banding Program. This agency is responsible for regulating bird banding and is run by the United States Geological Survey and the Canadian Wildlife Service.
Bird banding is useful for determining how long different species live, how they are affected by environmental changes, what their migration patterns are, and much more. The North American Bird Banding Program collects and analyzes data annually. From 1960-2016, the United States alone has banded: 218,149 golden-crowned kinglets; 174,598 cedar waxwings; 490,531 northern cardinals; and 52,949 red-breasted nuthatches.
North America is a paradise for many songbirds. Thanks to bird banding, scientists can keep track of each species and begin conservation efforts if populations decline. As long as this program is around songbirds and their unique melodies will be too.

Pets Stamps 2016 Postage Stamps
Regular price $32.99 Save $-32.99The United States Postal Service will issue its set of 20 non-denominated (47¢) forever Pets stamps on Aug. 2, with a first-day ceremony in Las Vegas, Nev.
The 20 stamps are being issued together in a double-sided pane of 20, described as a booklet by the Postal Service. Each stamp shows a photograph of one pet: puppy, betta fish, iguana, hamster, goldfish, kitten, rabbit, tortoise, guinea pig, parrot, corn snake, mouse, hermit crab, chinchilla, gerbil, gecko, cat, horse, parakeet, and dog.
The Pets Stamps designs use existing photographs by Eric Isselee of the different animals, each with a white background.
Each design also includes a word or two to describe the pet group the pictured animal represents (such as, “guinea pigs”), along with “Forever USA” and the word “pets.”
The designer for this issue is U.S. Post art director Derry Noyes, who was inspired by her lifelong love of animals, according to the Postal Service.
“The goal was to capture the essence of each animal,” she said. “There’s no need for special effects. The animals speak for themselves. I love the variety of shapes, colors, textures, and facial expressions.”
The Postal Service ordered a large initial print run of 400 million Pets stamps, a sign, perhaps, that U.S. Post officials expect the Pets stamps to be popular with the stamp-buying public.
That earlier set was so popular that the initial print run of 300 stamps was bolstered by a second printing of 91.4 million stamps announced six months after the stamps were first issued.
The new Pets stamps feature a well-rounded selection of domesticated animals, including two cats and two dogs, two birds, two fish, four reptiles, six rodents, a horse, and a hermit crab.
Animals have always been popular with topical stamp collectors, and dogs, cats, and birds are among the favorite subjects. Pets are also popular with the American public, according to the Postal Service, with more than half of U.S. homes having at least one pet.
“The most common pets are dogs and cats,” the Postal Service noted. “These furry, four-legged family members have long provided love, friendship, and sometimes protection for their owners.”
The digital color first-day postmark for the Pets issue features silhouette images of six different animals, each in a bold, solid color: horse, goldfish, snake, dog, cat, and parrot. This postmark is used on certain uncached first-day covers sold in a set of 20 by the Postal Service.
Press sheets consisting of 160 stamps (eight panes of 20) are being offered as well. The total number of press sheets made available to collectors was not announced.

Jack-O’-Lanterns Stamps - 2016
Regular price $32.99 Save $-32.99The tradition of carving Jack-o’-lanterns came from a fear of “Will-o’-the-wisps” from English folklore. Will-o’-the-wisp describes a ghostly or supernatural event called ignis fatuus, or”foolish fire.” Some say it resembles a figure carrying a lantern. Others see just a floating ball of light. Ignis fatuus sightings are most often by travelers at night, especially in swamps or marshes.
These eerie lights would retreat if approached, but followed a person if they turned and walked away. The legend warns against following a Will-o’-the-wisp, as they are said to lead travelers to their death. To ward off these evil spirits, people carved faces into turnips and put candles inside to make them as frightening as possible (they actually resembled Will-o’-the-wisps). This tradition was especially important on Halloween when the barrier between Earth and the spirit world was easily crossed.
Many countries have their own legends about Will-o’-the-wisps. Though scientists have tried to understand how these spectral lights are formed, they have not found a definite answer. Will-o’-the-wisps remains one of the unsolved mysteries of Halloween. They add to the thrill of the night and remind wayward travelers to remain vigilant lest they be lured from safe paths by a Will-o’-the-wisp.

2016 - Patriotic Spiral Stamps
Regular price $32.99 Save $-32.99WASHINGTON — The U.S. Postal Service will issue the Patriotic Spiral First-Class Forever stamps in booklets of 10 for consumers and self-adhesive coils of 10,000 for businesses. Both formats will be available on August 19 nationwide and will be issued formally that day in Falls Church, VA, in booklet format, and in Kansas City, MO, in large coil format.
On August 19, 2016, the U.S. Postal Service issued the Patriotic Spiral stamps in Falls Church, VA. This festive and energetic stamp design features 50 blue and red stars spiraling around a central gold star on a white background.
The idea for the design was to illustrate a community of stars protectively orbiting a central star that in an abstract sense stands for our nation’s steadfast idealism and hope for a more perfect union.
Antonio Alcalá art directed the project with stamp design and typography by Polygraph, a Washington, D.C. design firm. This listing is for a cut strip of 50 stamps, cut from a larger roll.
Throughout its history, liberty and freedom have been the defining principles of the United States of America. The stars of our nation’s flag represent fifty separate states united by these principles and the patriots who fought for them.
The Patriotic Spiral forever stamp was announced on Aug. 3. It is being issued on Aug. 19 in two formats: booklets of 10 for consumers and in coils of 10,000 for businesses. Both the booklet and the coil stamps are self-adhesive.
The booklet format is being issued in Falls Church, Va., and the coil stamps in Kansas City, Mo. Americover is taking place Aug. 19-21 in Falls Church.
Collectors requesting first-day cancels are encouraged to purchase their own stamps and affix them to envelopes. The first-day cover envelopes should be addressed for return (a removable label may be used) and mailed in a larger envelope.
The Patriotic Spiral stamps will always be equal in value to the current First-Class Mail 1-ounce price.

Eid Greetings Stamps
Regular price $32.99 Save $-32.99The Muslim prophet Muhammad observed the first Eid (or celebration) with his followers after winning the Battle of Badr.
In 622, the Muslims left their homes in Mecca because of religious persecution and settled in Medina. They raided caravans along the trade route to Mecca as a means of economic survival and as revenge for being forced from their homes.
During the spring of 624, 1,000 camels laden with goods were headed to Mecca. Muhammad and his small army of 313 men set out for the oasis at Badr to intercept the caravan. When the nobles in Mecca found out about the planned raid, they joined forces to protect their possessions.
The two armies met, with the Meccan forces three times as numerous as Muhammad’s troops. Three champions from each side fought first, and all three men from Mecca were killed. A full-scale attack followed. The Muslim holy book, the Quran, reports thousands of angels came from Heaven and terrorized the enemy. The large army fled. This victory increased the prophet’s reputation and led to the expansion of Islam.
Muhammad’s men, who had fasted before battle, feasted that evening. Today, Muslims celebrate the breaking of fasts with Eid festivities of their own.
